What does it really mean to care for someone, especially in the later years of their life?

In this episode of Rainmakers, host Paul Llewellyn takes us to Sherwood Care in Sherwood Park, Alberta, a long-term care facility where compassion, faith, and a commitment to dignity shape the way seniors are cared for every day.

We meet Kathy Fortunat, CEO of Sherwood Care, who began her journey as a night-shift nurse more than 28 years ago. What started as a part-time position became a lifelong calling, eventually leading her into a leadership role she never imagined for herself.

Kathy introduces us to the people who make Sherwood Care feel like home. From nurses and healthcare aides to recreation staff and chaplaincy, we see how meaningful relationships, music, spiritual support, and even innovative technology are helping residents feel valued and cared for.

We also hear how Sherwood Care is exploring new approaches to dementia care, including technology that helps identify pain in residents who may struggle to communicate and music programs that bring moments of connection and joy.

Through it all, Kathy shares a belief that has guided her leadership: when you care for the people providing care, they are better able to care for others.

And as she reflects on Sherwood Care's Christian roots, she reminds us that showing the love of Jesus doesn't always require words. Sometimes it's found in listening, offering comfort, or simply taking the time to make someone feel seen.
