The Great Outdoors
Royalty, Risk, and Rescue
What do you do when doing the right thing could cost you everything?
In this episode of The Great Outdoors, Jeff Potts takes us to Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia, and tells the story of Esther, an orphaned young woman who became queen of one of the most powerful empires in the world.
Her story begins with an unlikely rise to royalty. Esther, also known as Hadassah, had lost her parents and was raised by her cousin Mordecai. Years later, she was brought into the Persian palace and chosen by King Xerxes to become queen.
But Esther’s position soon became far more important than she could have imagined.
When Haman, one of the most powerful men in the empire, plotted to destroy the Jewish people, Mordecai challenged Esther to use her position to intervene. The problem was simple and terrifying: approaching the king without being summoned could cost Esther her life.
Then came the words that have echoed through generations:
“Perhaps you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this.”
Esther chose to act.
After three days of fasting, she entered the king’s throne room, not knowing whether she would be welcomed or killed. The king extended his golden sceptre, and Esther began the careful process that would eventually expose Haman’s plan and save her people.
The story takes another dramatic turn as Haman’s pride begins to undo him. While he plans Mordecai’s death, the king discovers that Mordecai had once saved his life and orders Haman to publicly honour the very man he despised. Soon after, Esther reveals Haman’s plot to the king, and Haman’s plans collapse around him.
In the end, Esther’s courage helped save her people.
But the bigger question remains:
What if God has placed you where you are for a reason too?
Maybe you don’t see the full picture yet. Esther didn’t either. But her story is a reminder that God can use ordinary people, unexpected circumstances, and even difficult moments to accomplish something far bigger than we can see at the time.
