What is True Religion?

What does true religion actually look like?

In this episode of The Great Outdoors, Jeff Potts takes us to Pauley’s Cove near Halifax, Nova Scotia, and walks through one of Jesus’ best-known stories: the Good Samaritan.

The story begins with a simple question: Who is my neighbour?

A man is attacked, beaten and left beside the road from Jerusalem to Jericho. A priest sees him and walks by. A Levite stops long enough to look, but decides not to get involved. Then a Samaritan, someone the injured man would have considered an enemy, stops, helps him, tends his wounds and pays for his care.

Jesus’ answer is hard to miss.
Our neighbour is not just the person who looks like us, believes like us, lives near us or belongs to our circle.
Anyone in need is our neighbour.

Jeff also explores how the Good Samaritan points us back to Jesus Himself. Just as the Samaritan rescued a man who could not save himself, Jesus came to rescue us; healing what is broken, offering forgiveness and giving us a hope we could never create on our own.

True religion is more than knowing the right things or belonging to the right group. James 1:27 describes faith that God accepts as caring for people in need and living a life shaped by Him.

That means following Jesus will eventually move us toward people, not away from them.
It means noticing. Getting involved. Showing compassion. Helping when it costs us something.
